Inflammation In Our Bodies, Inflammation in Our World: The Tao of Trauma

Description
This workshop explores the physiology of inflammation in our bodies and our world -
and chronic inflammation as a key feature of the disruptions of the autonomic nervous system arising from
traumatic stress. The interface of diverse expressions of inflammation in our culture, environment and public health will be explored. The framework of Chinese medicine and 5 Element Theory will illuminate the self-protective response, the impact of traumatic stress on the gut biome and our immune system and its
manifestation as chronic, multi-symptom illness in trauma survivors. Acupuncturists cultivating the Ventral
Vagus nerve and the Heart Shen can be valuable allies for healing.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this Workshop, learners will be able to:
• •Discuss the evolution of the understanding of the causes of disease in Western medicineto include
germs, genetics and inflammation.
• •Discuss the evolution of understanding the causes of disease in Chinese medicine toinclude
relationship with ancestors, internal, external and other causes of disease, andthe fundamental premise of
the strength of the pathogen, and the strength of the host.
• •Discuss the relationship between traumatic stress and chronic inflammation.
• •Describe the steps of the Self-Protective Response through the interface of the neurobiology of
traumatic stress and Chinese Medicine’s Five Element theory.
• •Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the enteric or visceral brain in the neurophysiology of
traumatic stress and its impact on gut biome function, including the production of t-cells and immune
function.
• •Describe the critical function of the Ventral Vagus nerve, the Shen, and our capacity for social
engagement in mitigating the impact of traumatic stress.
